Manual Lymph Drainage and Combined Decongestive Therapy in the Treatment of Lymphedema

Manual lymph drainage and combined decongestive therapy are manual techniques to relieve the symptoms of lymphedema.  Lymphedema is characterized by localized swelling and fluid retention due to lymphatic obstruction. This can be caused by injury or previous surgery to the lymphatic vessels, or in some people it is hereditary. It is most commonly seen after lymph node dissection or radiation therapy in the treatment of cancer.  Lymphedema can be associated with any diseases or accidents that impede the normal functioning of the lymphatic system.

What is Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)?

MLD is a massage modality performed by a practitioner certified by the Dr. Vodder School. It is used to encourage redirection of lymph fluid from an area of accumulation into functioning areas for absorption and transport. MLD is primarily used in the treatment of lymphedema but current research is showing that it has many applications.

What is Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT)?

CDT is another massage modality performed by a practitioner certified by the Dr. Vodder School. CDT follows every application of MLD that involves swelling. Bandaging, similar to tensor bandaging, is wrapped around the affected limb to assist in drainage. This is necessary because the lymphatic system is as vast as the circulatory system but lacks a central pump and must work against the force of gravity.

Is MLD and CDT covered by my private health insurance?

MLD and CDT are both modalities within the scope of practice of a Registered Massage Therapist. MLD and CDT are covered by private health insurance companies as long as you have coverage for Massage Therapy. The cost of bandaging is paid by the client separately and is usually not covered by insurance.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed but a proper medical diagnosis is required in order to receive MLD and CDT for swelling that is not due to an acute injury. If you have not obtained a diagnosis, please consult your family doctor.

How much does it cost and how long are treatments?

At Great Lakes Physiotherapy a one hour treatment is $80 including HST. The initial assessment is always a one hour visit. After the initial visit, one hour treatments are recommended and have the best outcome.

How often do I need treatments?

For intensive conditions, 2-3 times per week is recommended to control and decrease the swelling. For conditions that are not intensive, frequency is reduced accordingly.
